How do you have a child?

What has to happen first?

You have to be married. There is no route to a child before the wedding.

From the day of the ceremony, count two weeks. On the night that timer runs out, going to bed triggers a dream in which you meet the Great Bird, described in game as the guide of souls in Mistria.

The Great Bird gives you a Mystical Feather. It is in your inventory when you wake up.

How do you actually start the conversation?

Hold the feather and talk to your spouse. That opens the family planning discussion, in the same way holding the Engagement Ring opens the proposal.

You can postpone if you change your mind, exactly like the proposal. Nothing is lost.

One detail matters more than it looks: your spouse never raises the subject on their own. If you never hold the feather, the conversation simply never happens. The official FAQ confirms players can choose not to have a child at all.

What happens after you agree?

The following night you have a second dream, and this time your spouse is there too.

The Great Bird confirms that among the stars there is a soul that wants to join your family, then asks how the baby should arrive. That choice is covered on its own page, because it has more options than most people expect.

How long does the baby take?

Two weeks from that second dream.

The due date is marked on your calendar, so you are not left guessing. There is no random element to it.

What do you do with the baby once it arrives?

You name it. Each spouse suggests a name, which appears as the default, but you can change it to whatever you like.

By default your spouse carries the baby around as they go about their day. You can take the baby from them and carry it yourself instead.

Carrying a baby does not slow you down or restrict you. You can farm, fish, mine and fight exactly as before with the child in your arms.

If you would rather leave the baby at home, Landen mails you a crib when the child is delivered. Place it and the baby stays put.

Is any of this reversible?

Not in the usual sense, and the reason is worth knowing before you commit.

There is no divorce in 1.0, so you cannot remarry to see another spouse's version of this. Whatever you choose here is what that save file gets.

The child's appearance and gender are also fixed by which candidate you married, so those are not choices either. Only the name is yours.

Where should you go next?

The delivery options and what they actually change are covered separately, along with how many children you can have and whether they ever grow up.
